EQUIPMENT MANAGERS and ASSISTANTS:
General pre-washing, washing and drying instructions.

CAUTION! Upon receipt of new uniforms, launder a single new uniform to check for colorfastness. Then wash new uniforms using a small amount of detergent in warm water at high level in warm water. Rinse 2-3 minutes at a time until the water in the washer is clear. During this process, load the machine to no more than 75% capacity. Launder garments as soon as possible after activity. When garments cannot be laundered immediately, rinse them out and place them on plastic or coated hangers; perspiration can cause color migration. Carefully ensure damp garments are not left in a pile or stored in travel bags. Color transfer may occur.

TIME:

For light to medium soil:

  • Always rinse first for at least 3 minutes.
  • The washing process (with detergent) should last a recommended 8-12 minutes.
  • Heavy soil washing process (with detergent) should last a recommended 12-20 minutes.
  • Several short rinses are required to remove detergent residue and remaining soil.
  • Extraction time may require up to 5 minutes.
WATER:
  • Use low water levels when using detergent.
  • Use high water levels when rinsing.
  • For light to medium soil – water temperature should range 70o – 90o
  • Heavy soil water temperature should be increased not to exceed 120o
  • Use caution when washing colors! Higher temperatures increase the possibility of running colors.
  • Hard water conditions may require increasing the amount of detergent by as much as 2 ounces.
  • Remember, seasons of the year effect water temperatures<./li>
MECHANICAL ACTION:
  • The mechanical action of the washer has a significant effect on removing soil.
  • Overloading the washer decreases the mechanical action.
  • Mechanical action reduces the possibility of dye transfer.
CHEMICAL ACTION:
  • Types of detergents vary. Light to medium soil requires a less aggressive detergent.
  • Heavy soil removal requires stronger detergents. The pH range should be 10, no higher than 11.
  • Grass stains require enzyme-enhanced detergents.
  • Paint stains require solvents. (Generally a specialty product).
DRYING:

If hanging dry is not possible, tumble dry on air setting. Excessive heat can cause garment shrinkage, discoloration, and degradation of lettering. Consideration should be given to using a disinfectant to help prevent spread of infections.
